UNESCO
- UNESCO is the short form of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
- It is a constituent body of the United Nations.
- It was formed on 4th November, 1946. Its purpose is to establish peace and security through international cooperation of education and culture, to achieve a global consensus on justice, the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
- Its task is to promote international peace through education, nature and social science, culture and communication.
- UNESCO has 195 member states and 11 associate member states and two observer member states.
- Its headquarter is in Paris (France).
- UNESCO has links with 332 international voluntary organizations around the world.
- The current Director-General of UNESCO is André Enzole.
- India is a member country of UNESCO since 1946.
- A total of 40 International Days are celebrated under the aegis of UNESCO.
- Some of the prominent names include International Women's Day on 8 March, World Press Freedom Day on 3 May, World Teachers Day on 5 October and International Day on 18 December.
- It has a general assembly every two years, which includes all UNESCO member states and observer countries.
- All countries have at least one vote for voting on any subject.
