National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog)


Introduction:-
NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India-NITI), a think tank of the Government of India established on 1 January 2015 as a replacement for the Planning Commission, to provide relevant strategic, directional and Was. Technical advice across the spectrum of key elements of the policy/development process. The Prime Minister of India heads the commission as the ex-officio chairman. Presently Rajiv Kumar is the Deputy Chairman of NITI Aayog. 

Composition of NITI Aayog:-  

  • Prime Minister of India as Chairman 
  • The Governing Council consisting of the Chief Ministers of all the States and the Lieutenant Governors of the Union Territories . 
  • Regional councils will be convened by the Prime Minister to address specific issues and contingencies affecting more than one state or one region and will include the Chief Ministers of the states and the Lieutenant Governors of the Union Territories. 
  • Experts , experts and practitioners with relevant domain knowledge as special invitees nominated by the Prime Minister . 
  • Apart from the Prime Minister as the Chairman, the full-time organizational structure will be involved. 
Vice-President appointed by the Prime Minister:- 

  • whole time member 
  • Not exceeding 2 part time members from research organizations of leading universities and other relevant institutions in an ex-officio capacity 
  • Maximum 4 members of the Union Council of Ministers to be nominated by the Prime Minister as ex-officio members 
  • Chief Executive Officer to be appointed by the Prime Minister for a fixed term in the rank of Secretary to the Government of India. 
  • Secretariat as deemed necessary. 
The present composition of NITI Aayog is as follows:-

Objectives of NITI Aayog:- 

  • To develop a shared vision of national development priorities , sectors and strategies with the active participation of the states in the light of the national objectives .
  • Promoting cooperative federalism through structured support initiatives and mechanisms with states on an ongoing basis , recognizing that strong states make a strong nation.
  • Developing mechanisms for making credible plans at the village level and progressively collating these at higher levels of government.
  • To ensure that the interests of national security are incorporated into economic strategy and policy.
  • Pay special attention to those sections of our society who may be at risk of not benefiting adequately from economic progress.
  • Designing strategic and long-term policy and program frameworks and initiatives , and monitoring their progress and their efficacy.
  • Providing advice and encouraging partnerships among key stakeholders and national and international like-minded think tanks as well as academic and policy research institutions.
  • To focus on technology up-gradation and capacity building for implementation of programs and initiatives.
